AUTOS: 2013 Shelby GT500 Pricing Set

If you have your heart set on a hyper-performance 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, start saving those nickels and dimes because it will cost you.

Base price for the GT500 coupe will be just under $55,000, while the convertible version will go for just under $60,000, both including shipping.
That might sound like a lot for a Mustang, but what other 650-horsepower supercar can you get for that price? Answer: none. Load it up with performance goodies and luxury features, and the coupe can get up around $62,000, still something of a bargain considering its commanding performance.

The newest GT500 comes with a supercharged 5.8-liter V8 and standard transmission only, and its performance can be enhanced by a SVT Performance Package for about $3,500. Ford says the aluminum engine, which also produces a maximum torque of 600 pound-feet, is the most powerful production V8 in the world.

The GT500’s base price is essentially the same as that for the 2013 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 coupe, also around $55,000 though it is powered by a “mere” 580-horsepower engine. On balance, the base ZL1 comes with a slightly higher level of premium content.

2013 GMC Terrain Denali Debuts with New 3.6L V6: New York Auto Show Preview

GM has revealed the 2013 GMC Terrain Denali ahead of its official unveiling at the 2012 New York
Auto Show. The introduction of the Terrain Denali comes with the announcement of an all-new 3.6L V6 engine that will replace the outgoing 3.0L V6 for the 2013 Terrain  model year. The new V6 powerplant will be rated at 301-hp and 272 lb-ft of torque and is expected to deliver better fuel economy than its predecessor.

Those interested in a Terrain but not necessarily a V6 will still have the option of a 2.4L, four-cylinder Ecotec engine that has a best-in-class 32-mpg highway rating while sporting 182-hp and 172 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel drive will be standard on the Terrain Denali with all-wheel drive available as an option for buyers.

Lotus Suspends Development Of New Models Due To Pending Proton Sale

As one of the few people who doesn’t hate the direction Lotus is going in, the news that development of Lotus’ entire lineup is disheartening. It seems that the Malaysian government is looking to unload their stake in Proton, parent company of Lotus. Malaysian takeover laws stipulate a three month “lockdown” on any company that may change hands, ostensibly as part of a “due diligence” period. That means that car production can continue, but Lotus cannot do any real R&D work. CEO Dany Bahar is apparently flying to Kuala Lumpur...

2013 Chevrolet Malibu 2.5L, Turbocharged 2.0L Specs Announced

Until now, all we have seen from the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu is the Eco model with its eAssist 2.4L four-cylinder. But now we finally have details on the non-hybrid variants of the Malibu, which will come with either a 2.5L naturally aspirated four-cylinder, or a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder.

The naturally aspirated 2.5L will have 197-hp and 191 lb-ft of torque, which is 28-hp more than the previous four-cylinder Malibu. The 2.5L four-cylinder is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

The more powerful of the two powerplants is the 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder that pumps out 259-hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. This is a slight increase over the outgoing V6 Malibu that had 252-hp, but should be fairly quicker thanks to the aid of a turbo. Chevy currently claims that the Malibu turbo will hit 60-mph in just 6.3 seconds. Just like the 2.5L engine, the 2.0L turbo also has a six-speed automatic transmission.

No fuel economy figures have been released, but it’s safe to assume the 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder will not only be more powerful than the outgoing V6, but have better fuel efficiency.

Mazda CX-5 raises the bar

The story of the 2013 Mazda CX-5 began in 2005 when Mazda began mapping out its long-term strategy in a post-Ford world. This is how the car business works. What you see in showrooms today was conceived long ago.

SkyActiv, the buzzword Mazda is using to describe the company’s comprehensive take on improving fuel economy and reducing emissions in vehicles that remain fun to drive, is all about “wiping the slate clean,” says Mazda senior engineer Dave Coleman, the self-described Director of Technobabble.
