Porsche 918 Spyder, The Future Car ...

The Porsche 918 Spyder goes into production September 2013 and on sale in the U.S. near the end of the year. Porsche hasn't said but it’s a guess that it will be a 2014 model. MSRP will be $845,000, Porsche said.

The Porsche 918 Spyder is a mid-engined sports car designed by Porsche and first shown as a concept at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2010. The Spyder is powered by a 3.4 litre V8 engine, developing 500 horsepower (370 kW), with three electric motors delivering an additional 218 horsepower (163 kW). It is the first plug-in hybrid car from Porsche.

Porsche reckons the plug-in hybrid 918 will hit 62mph from rest in 3.2 seconds, top out at over 199mph and will lap the Ring in seven minutes and 30 seconds - 2 seconds faster than the Carrera GT. Using just electricity, it’ll top out at 94mph, in silence, probably.

A lithium-ion liquid-cooled battery will power the electric motors, and charged from a regular plug will offer an all-electric range of 16 miles. Charge time is around three hours.

Should your burning desire for everything 918 Spyder exceed the brain cells responsible for ‘reason’, Porsche is offering Spyder customers the exclusive opportunity to purchase a limited edition 911 Turbo S ‘918 Spyder edition’. Basically a Turbo with acid green trimmings and some badges, limited to 918 models.

The 918 Spyder is also subject to numerous video games appearances, most notably in several games of the third generations of “Need for Speed” series. It was originally featured in the game “Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit” as a drivable vehicle. It was later featured in “Shift 2: Unleashed”.
